Buxton Festival is held during the first three weeks of July. It is recognised internationally as one of the UK’s leading arts festivals and is a celebration of the very best opera, music and literature.
Unfortunately Buxton Festival 2020 has been cancelled following the Coronavirus outbreak. We’re sure they’ll be back in 2021
Performances
Opera: ‘Alzira’ by Giuseppe Verdi, ‘Idomeneo’ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, ‘The Daughter of the Regiment’ by Gaetano Donizetti and ‘Tisbe’ by Guiseppe Antonio Brescianello
Music: Piano, string quartets, guitar quartets, songs by the Beatles, jazz, allsorts!
Literature: From Tony Robinson to Terence Stamp and from Jenni Murray to Shirley Williams. Lots of interesting people and subjects
Venues
Events and performances are held in several venues around the town which are all worth a visit in their own right;
The beautiful Buxton Opera House, a 900 seat, Frank Matcham designed theatre that dates back to the early 20th century
The neighbouring Pavilion Arts Centre
St Johns Church, built in the early 19th century at the request of the Duke of Devonshire and renown for its excellent acoustics
New for 2018 and really exciting, the ‘Spiegeltent’ (Dutch for ‘mirror tent’), hidden somewhere in the Pavilion Gardens
